Happiness - What’s that like????

Happiness - state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy (As defined in oxford dictionary)

What do I think is happiness??? Is the question I have asked myself a zillion times (I hope that’s a valid word!!). We all have a self assumed goal or a dream and we work zealously towards its achievement. We work like dogs, sweat it out, slave it out, plan every single day to the tiniest detail to get the best out of it and at the end tell ourselves “yes I have succeeded!” .but what is truly the end of the road??? What do we expect from success? Hopefully you must have answered “happiness” (coz that’s the title!)

At times I find it very amusing that people who live on streets, who never know what tomorrow is going to bring them, who do not even have a shelter to protect themselves from the ravages of nature, seem so blissfully content with their lives while a man with all the luxury in the world takes a 100 pills a day for high blood pressure and insomnia…the sad irony of life I think is that the more you have the more you worry about how to protect all that you have earned. A person’s lifetime is valued based on the materialistic gain rather than intellectual gain or work done for the cause of social well being.

Success of course in the most generic term refers to monetary, emotional and intellectual fulfillment but I don think I have ever come across a person however successful they are to accept that they have attained such a fulfillment. It is always the question of I wish I had some more (someone asks u for 3 wishes n u ask for a thousand more). When did man become like this??? Or has he always been like this…
May be an imaginary conversation between 2 cavemen would have gone like this

Caveman 1: I killed 2 mammoths today…it will suffice for the whole year
Caveman 2: hmmm I don know…what if the ice melts and all our storage goes waste??? We should not stop hunting!

We always plan for every contingency…We do amazing risk analysis and come up with the most startling results… “Oh in about 40 years from now we may never be able to get a seat for our grand children in any educational institution so let us book a seat now!!” yes life has become THAT ridiculous!! We panic about something that’s going to happen after 200 years…

We have forgotten to live in the present, to savor the relationships we have NOW…We have forgotten to say “I’m happy!”. We have forgotten to relish the small things in life like getting drenched in the rain, going for a ride on a giant wheel, eating mom’s home made samosas on a rainy day…. Coz “we jus don have the time for such triviality”!!(Yeah right!)It is sad that humankind is chasing the rainbow of the future yet never realizing that reality is pretty gr8 too!!

“Happiness is not enough for me…I demand euphoria!”
-May be this quote from Calvin defines the whole of humanity

    Oh my god!!!
That was an awesome topic u decided to write your post on.
I loved the cave man conversation. True most of us are that way we want to be prepared for every eventuality . We want to plan everything to the T only to find out that nothing went the way we planned but turned out to be pretty good eventually.

    Hey an ...
It does not matter when u start it but what matters is the way u start and u ll be to glad to hear that ur bang on ...right on the money the very first time... Awesome dude...

Am delighted to see that u have started with something most of us forget to relish when its available and crave for it in its absence... Happiness is something thats as contagious as ur smile and can lift so many sagging spirits...

Its something that ceases to exist the day u enter this goddamn software industry where so many people work like dogs just for the sake of money and recognition which never comes....

Life is an amalgamation of small yet euphoric moments and things which money cant buy and of course mastercard too cant...

A person who pulls a rickshaw or drives an auto is content with his life and hence is much more happier than say a software pro for the simple reason that his life is simple as there are no deliveries to be made... no headache with onsite coordinator(as is the case here:-( ), no meetings... just pure enjoyment... He has lunch at the roadside shop, tea at the pottikadai stall with the typical radio blaring and the friendly yet interesting gossip of autowalas.
His life is simple yet he enjoys life more than anyone of us(yeah all of us included... no one spared:-( ).
Happiness is a state which can fluctuate. Its something like Brian Lara's batting or Michael Schumacher's(Since its for anu... else its Kimi) driving which should be enjoyed to the core while it lasts.

Hey An … that was really good.

I agree with you when you say that success is always measured in monetary terms.

True…….People, who spend most of their time planning for the future don’t realize what they are losing now.….. But things today are very different from how they were 20-30 yrs back.. In a world of stiff competition, unless you plan ahead, you lose the race.

    Gr8 start An ….

(I particularly don’t agree with one of those comments which says an Autowala is content with his life and in fact is happier than a s/w engg. Being a Chennaite and one who travels quite frequently in an auto, I can say, that’s definitely not true.)

good one.. very true indeed... people dont seem to enjoy life.. They are working 12-16 hrs a day to earn lots of money.. ironically they dont have time to spend even half the money!!! well thats the way society is built...and thats the way 90% of us will live..

Hey anu!!! Tis s really a wonderful topic tat u ve chosen.Way to go!!!

Discussing about this topic ll b like never-ending :-) Happiness s something which blossoms out of small small accomplishments or moments we spend with our loved ones or a matter of fact the realisation tat we were very disciplined in meetin d schedule fr tat particular day or watchin our fav soccer or cricket team win..Ultimately happiness is somethin which every person in the world s gettin every day but just tat he/she doesn't realise and crave fr somethin more materialistic or monetary or which may/may not happen in future.

Even an eager beaver fails to relish dose small moments of joy ironically which s sad to see.

Not philosophical here but live every minute of life and be content with even little accomplishments be it at work or anywhere so tat life s always glowin and paves way fr those rare euphoric moments.

    Great start!!!! Keep postin !!!

    Happiness -What's that Like...

Happiness is a choice that we ourself have to make. It is a state of being only we ourself can create it.

I agree that we forgotten to live the present, we have forgotten to relish the small things

But in this competitive world nobody is ready to accept that reality is gr8 everybody wants their future to be gr8.

A great post to start with.. Keep Goin..
